Announcing SEAWEED by Elle Strauss!

A teen swim athlete discovers a merfolk world that threatens to keep her out of the ocean forever.

Dori Seward can’t wait to get out of Eastcove, a sleepy fishing village on the border of New Brunswick and Maine. She bides her time by hanging out with friends, attending swim club, and holding her biggest competition, Colby–who wants more than just friendship, at arm’s length.

Then Tor Riley comes to town and he has everything Dori dreams of in a boyfriend–looks, athleticism and mystery.

But Tor also has a tantalizing secret and Dori is determined to find out what it is. The truth is crazier than her wildest imaginations and more dangerous, too.

Dori has new fantastical enemies , and they will do anything to get to her.

Her life, her dreams and her love for Tor are all weighing in the balance. Will Dori risk it all in order to have it all?

SEAWEED is FREE for a limited time on Amazon!

It’s also free on itunes and smashwords.

Some thangs and #ROW80

I have a list of things I keep meaning to tell you all!

If you have a blog: Sign up for the Indelibles INDIEpendence Day celebration!

If you like to read interesting posts and win stuff: Visit the Mid Summer Dream Fair! My post is called The Stage and it’s coming up at the end of the month.

If you want to win a paperback copy of the Day of Sacrifice Omnibus: Sign up on Goodreads or…sign up on that big sign up widget thingy over in the sidebar there.

If you want to get two monthly newsletters about new releases from the Indelibles and the Pacific Northwest YA Authors: Click the link for the Indelibles and for the PacNWYAAuthors to sign up.

Row80 update: I’m making decent progress on the pen name stories and I purchased an e-book cover, so that’s a done deal. I thought of yet another funny story for the BABD blog…and someday I might actually write it and the other 17 stories I have to put on there. I haven’t worked anymore on Found.

With the kids out of school and my husband only working away from home three days a week, I just can’t get anyone to leave me alone. If I didn’t have to pay for a new roof in July, I’d seriously consider renting office space and putting the kids in day care for a few hours every day!

Whenever people interview me they always ask how I manage to write books and stay at home with the kids. It’s a friggin’ MIRACLE that’s how. I have no idea. It just gets done and never in as timely a manner as I want. ;)

Zellie trilogy e-card winners and #ROW80 update

Happy Sunday!
First things first, I’d like to announce the winners of the five Zellie Wells trilogy e-cards from my Indelibles Beach Bash post.

They are:
Delphina, Artemis, Brandi, Susan, and Linda! Congratulations to you all and thank you to everyone that entered the drawing.

I’ll be sending the signed e-cards out on Tuesday.

ROW80 update – I haven’t updated in forever – apart from a couple of status updates on the Facebook page. Mostly, because every time I thought about writing one, I realized nothing much had changed from the Wednesday or Sunday before.

Now, I have lots saved up to report. :)

Unfavorable (Day of Sacrifice #6) and the Day of Sacrifice Omnibus are completed and have been released into the wild. (Amazon, BN, Smashwords)

Both are selling pretty well, I have no complaints, especially given that we are about to move into what I’ve found to be the slowest months for book sales.

Writing the Day of Sacrifice series was an interesting experiment and one I’m not likely to repeat EXACTLY any time soon. :) My advice would be that if you’re going to write a serial, put out an installment on a weekly basis and have most, if not all, of the installments written beforehand. The DoS stories were fun to write and I loved the characters, but it was an extremely stressful endeavor.

I plan on doing another novelette “series” with Back in Time serving as the jumping off story, but these will all have a shared Time Travel Romance theme and can be read out of order as standalones.

What am I working on NOW? I started writing the first book in my new upper YA….NA? Penny Black trilogy.  The prologue was great fun to write – it’s all characters from the Zellie books catching the reader up.

However, when I went to write Penny’s first chapter, it all came out in first person present instead of first person past, like I’d planned.

Hmm. I’m going to roll with it. It just seems to fit her personality.  My only problem is that the prologue is third person past and I planned on writing alternating chapters in another character’s voice – first person past.  I have to make some decisions about tense, obviously.  All I know is that I’m not interested in doing the whole shebang in third person past or alternating between first person and third person past. I did that on the Zellie books and it was hard to switch back and forth.

I think the prologue can be different from the rest of the novel…but I just won’t know until I’ve finished the book, I guess.

I would love some advice on this one!!!

Anyway, that’s what I’m working on now. I’ve also got a couple of half-written essays I need to finish for Be Awesome, Beautiful Dreamer, a pen name story that needs attention, and I want to get started on the next BiT story so that I’ll have something to publish at mid-summer. Otherwise, that’s probably too long of a break in between published works.

But, for now, I’m going to go put on some sweatpants (it’s still March in Oregon) and go see Dark Shadows.

Have a great rest of the holiday weekend!

Chapter One

CASEY

Beginning of Summer Holidays

Sometimes  I wished I were an only child. But then I’d be walking or taking  transit instead of getting a lift from my brother Tim in his Cavalier  beater. He didn’t have air conditioning either, and the wind blowing in  from our open windows was hot and moist. The humidity made me feel like I  was wearing a warm, wet washcloth for a shirt.

“Can’t  you drop me off first?” I said, fanning myself with my hand. I was  meeting my best friend Lucinda at the mall, and she only had a thirty  minute break from her job at Forever21. Plus, the mall was air conditioned. Bonus.

“I  gotta get some cash first. Besides, I’m not your personal taxi service,  Casey.” Tim snarled, turning the volume up on his stereo. The bass beat  was so loud it rattled the trunk. “Get off your lazy butt and get your  license already.”

I  gave him a dirty look and reached over to turn the music down. I had a  very good reason for not getting my license, but I could never tell Tim  or any member of my family what it was. There were only three people currently living who knew the reason. One of them was my boyfriend Nate Mackenzie.

My heart still fluttered a bit when I thought of him in those terms. My boyfriend. Not just some out-of-reach guy I crushed hard on my whole sophomore year, but my boyfriend.

We’d  already been an official couple for an entire year, totally blowing all  the doomsday predictions that we’d never make it. No one thought a  college boy would stick it out with a junior in high school–especially  Nate’s evil former girlfriend!

But  he did, and we were still going strong. I’d be starting my senior year  in a few weeks and then I’d join him at Boston University, too.

“If you dropped me off first, you wouldn’t have to deal with me,” I tried to reason.

“If I didn’t shuttle you around at all I wouldn’t have to deal with you.”

The  only reason he did was because my parents were putting the screws in.  Tim’s bad attitude, questionable choice of friends and poor grades put  him in their bad books. Driving me around was penance.

He  pulled into the parking lot of the bank and hopped out, leaving the car  running. I reached over and turned it off. Idling the car was bad for  the environment for one, and a waste of Tim’s hard-earned minimum-wage  job gas money for another. You’d think he’d know better.

I  checked the time on my phone and grew anxious as Lucinda’s break time  grew nearer. Tim had his back to me as he stood in line at the ATM  window. I looked at my reflection in the visor mirror. Since I’d grown  out of my skinny awkwardness last year (and snagged a hot boyfriend), I  was more mindful of my looks. Instead of trying to hide behind a bush of  dark, curly hair, I used better hair products and found a great  stylist, and I liked the way my curls framed my face now. I took a tube  of lip gloss out of my purse and rolled it onto my lips.

I  tugged on my shorts and rubbed my bare legs. They were so long, my  knees almost touched the glove compartment. Height had its advantages,  but getting comfortable in a small car wasn’t one of them.

I  turned the radio on and hummed along. I daydreamed about me and Nate  and how we could relax for the rest of the summer, hopefully stretching  the lazy days out as long as possible.

I checked the time on my phone again and immediately started stressing about being late to meet Lucinda. C’mon, Tim! He was second in line now. I texted Lucinda to let her know I might be a little late.

I  heard sirens and I perked up. This wasn’t the best neighborhood. The  bank wasn’t huge, just tucked into a strip mall along with a nail place,  a dollar store, and a thrift shop. Litter overflowed from the bin and a  good amount had been blown up against the cement foundation.

I  checked on Tim. He’d finally made it to the front, the last one in  line. If I’d known it was going to take him this long, I would’ve run  into the dollar store and picked up cheap nail polish.

The  siren noise grew increasingly louder and suddenly three cop cars pulled  into the parking lot beside me. My heart jumped, and I thought  fleetingly that maybe Tim was in trouble with the law again. Only, he  was getting money out of the ATM, not robbing the bank.

But someone was.

Everything happened so fast.

A  guy with a ski mask pushed past Tim as he ran out the bank doors. A cop  shouted, “Stop or I’ll shoot,” and another masked man followed. Guns  went off. Tim stood there, stunned and frozen.

I heard myself shout, “Tim!” He was right in the middle of the cross-fire!

A  police officer ran to him, pushing him to the ground just as the second  armed man shot in their direction. The officer fell to the ground,  taking the bullet instead of Tim.

The robbers ran around the corner and out of sight, chased by police officers on foot and a cruiser down the back ally.

I sprinted to Tim where he was on the ground by the fallen cop.

“Are you okay?” I asked, my voice tight.

His face was white, and he motioned to the woman beside him. “Yeah, but I don’t think she is.”

The officer moaned, holding her hand on her chest.

“Oh, ma’am, are you okay?” I searched for blood but couldn’t see any.

“I will be,” she said gasping for breath. “I have a vest on.”

Another officer kneeled beside her. “Ambulance is on its way.”

The  woman had dark hair pulled back in a low bun. Her eyes stayed pinched  together and her pale face glistened with sweat. The impact of the  bullet was enough to do some damage. I picked up her police hat that had  fallen off her head and handed it to her.

“Thank you,” I said.

“Just doing my duty.”

The ambulance arrived. The paramedics pushed us aside and lifted the woman onto a gurney.

The cop who’d checked her pulse stepped forward from his open door cruiser. Radio dispatch noises leaked out.

I watched the ambulance pull away, siren blasting, and realized I didn’t know her name. I asked the officer standing beside me.

“That’s Officer Clarice Porter,” he said. “Now, would you two mind coming with me to the station to file a report?”

We  agreed, and I took my first ride in a police car. It was Tim’s second,  but his first was not for noble reasons. He still claimed it was his  friend Alex, and not him, who’d stolen the cigarettes from the  convenience store.

A thought like a loud banner ran through my mind as the doors of the police cruiser slammed shut and we drove away.

Clarice Porter saved my brother’s life.

This is one of the very best YA series I have ever read and it’s definitely worth picking up. I think I love this series most because of the real-life drama and situations these teens are put in. Happy Easter, Paperback Action, and #ROW80

Good morning and Happy Easter!  I’ve got a crapton of eggs to devil, so I’ll get right to it. :)

The Zellie paperbacks have new inside and outside designs. (The story is the same – no matter how many people complain, the park bench scene stands. lol)

All of the books now have the blue sparkly e-book covers and I finally figured out how to make the page numbers start on the first page of the actual book instead of the literal first page. The covers are just starting to show up on Amazon and will probably take a while to show up everywhere else – they might, in fact, never show up on Barnes and Noble, as they still have the First Edition covers up.  We’re on the Third Edition here, people, catch up!

(I’m too lazy to make the files small enough to download here, but if you’d like to seem them they are up here. Robin Ludwig is AWESOME!!)

At any rate, if you’ve been waiting around for me to change the paperback covers to look like the e-book covers, I’ve done it. Please help spread the word.

ROW80: I’ve had a pretty good first week. After a bit of a timer malfunction on Monday – my Focus Booster timer disappeared from my screen, but kept going off randomly for a couple of hours and scaring the crap out of me – I downloaded a proper Pomodairo timer and that’s worked out better.

Monday – Wednesday I wrote each day, although I didn’t make it the full two hours. I averaged about an hour. I’m still keeping the goal at two hours, but not beating myself up if I don’t make it there.

Thursday and Friday I didn’t get any writing in at all because I was working on reformatting the paperback interiors. I didn’t expect that it would take me that long, but I format for paperback maybe twice a year, so I forget things from one instance to another.

Saturday I got four and a half hours of writing in. In addition to timing myself, I’m also trying to write without editing as I go. Ouch. It hurts. :) I wanted to attempt to finish the first draft of Unfavorable last night, but I was literally writing nonsense by the end of it and decided to go clean some Parenthood off the DVR instead. I’ve got nearly 5K for the week and that’s great for me. I’m hoping to do the same this week, or even 10 K and get Unfavorable done.

I am dying to work on Found.

Oh, Sexy New Ideas.

Read the first chapter of Don’t Fear the Reaper!

Enjoy this first chapter teaser from Don’t Fear the Reaper by Michelle Muto!

Synopsis:

Grief-stricken by the murder of her twin, Keely Morrison is convinced suicide is her ticket to eternal peace and a chance to reunite with her sister. When Keely succeeds in taking her own life, she discovers death isn’t at all what she expected. Instead, she’s trapped in a netherworld on Earth and her only hope for reconnecting with her sister and navigating the afterlife is a bounty-hunting reaper and a sardonic, possibly unscrupulous, demon. But when the demon offers Keely her greatest temptation—revenge on her sister’s murderer—she must uncover his motives and determine who she can trust. Because, as Keely soon learns, both reaper and demon are keeping secrets and she fears the worst is true—that her every decision will change how, and with whom, she spends eternity.

First Chapter Teaser:

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for they are with me.

I repeated my version of the psalm as I watched the ribbon of blood drift from my wrist. I’d hoped it would be a distraction—something to stop me from wondering what my sister’s dying thoughts had been. Exhaling slowly, I let the emptiness consume me.

Jordan had kept my secrets and I had kept hers. In the end, it came down to just one secret between us that took her life. Now, it would take mine. I should have said something, but nothing I said or did now could bring her back or make anyone understand what she meant to me.

Are you here, Jordan? Are you with me? Tell me about heaven…

I told myself Jordan was gone, never coming back, but her memories continued to haunt me. I had no idea if there even was an afterlife. If God existed, I was convinced he had given up on me. Not once did I sense he’d heard a single one of my prayers. I wasn’t asking for the world—I only wanted to know if my sister was safe and at peace. What was so hard about that?

She should still be here. It wasn’t fair.

I’d been the difficult one—much more than Jordan. For a while, I’d even gotten into drugs. Mom and Dad had worried I’d get Jordan into drugs, too. But I wouldn’t. Not ever. Besides, that part of my life had been over long before Jordan’s death. A small gargoyle tattoo on my left shoulder was all that remained of my previous lifestyle.

Mom and Dad started treating me differently after Jordan’s funeral two months ago. She and I were twins, so I understood how hard it was for them to look at me and not see her. Sometimes, they wouldn’t look at me at all. Mom went to the psychiatrist, but no one asked if I needed to talk to someone about what happened. No one asked if I needed sleeping pills or antidepressants. Yeah, sure. Don’t give the former addict pills of any sort.

Not one person saw the all-consuming suffering that gnawed at my soul. Why couldn’t anyone see? Jordan had been more than my sister—she’d been my Samson, my strength. I would have done anything for her, and yet, I’d failed her. I wasn’t the one who’d killed her, but I might as well have been. How could I ever live with that? My heart had a stillness to it since her death.

I shall fear no evil.

I couldn’t very well recite the first part of Psalm 23 because it said I shall not want, and I did want. I wanted to go back in time. I wanted my sister back. Clearly, goodness and mercy were never going to be part of my life ever again. In my mind, I saw myself walking through the iron gates of hell with demons cackling gleefully all around.

I didn’t want to die. Not really. I was just tired and didn’t know of another way to stop the pain. Doctors removed a bad appendix. Dentists pulled rotten teeth. What was I supposed to do when my very essence hurt, when the cancer I’d come to call depression made every decent memory agonizingly unbearable?

Before I’d gotten down to cutting my wrist (I managed to only cut one), I’d taken a few swigs of Dad’s tequila—the good kind he kept in the basement freezer. I’d used another swig or two to chase down the remainder of Mom’s sleeping pills in the event I failed to hit an artery or vein. Then I’d set the bottle on the ledge of the tub in case I needed further liquid encouragement. Instead of using a knife or a razor, I attached a cutting blade to my Dad’s Dremel. The Dremel was faster, I reasoned. More efficient.

It would have been easier to OD, I suppose. But I felt closer to my sister this way, to suffer as she’d suffered.

I recited the line from Psalms 23 again. It had become my personal mantra.

The words resonated in my parents’ oversized bathroom. I’d chosen theirs because the Jacuzzi tub was larger than the tub in the hall bathroom. Jordan and I used to take bubble baths together in this same tub when we were little.

Innocence felt like a lifetime ago. I searched the bathroom for bubble bath but came up short. Soap might have made the laceration hurt more so it was probably just as well. Besides, the crimson streaming from my wrist like watercolor on silk was oddly mesmerizing.

The loneliness inside proved unrelenting, and the line from the psalms made me feel better. I prayed for the agony inside me to stop. I argued with God. Pleaded. But after all was said and done, I just wanted the darkness to call me home.

I tried not to think of who would find my body or who’d read the note I’d left. I blamed myself not only for failing Jordan, but for failing my parents, too.

My lifeline to this existence continued to bleed out into the warm water. Killing myself had been harder than I’d imagined. I hadn’t anticipated the searing fire racing through my veins. I reached for the tequila with my good arm but couldn’t quite manage. Tears welled in my eyes.

Part of me foolishly felt Jordan was here. The other part feared she wasn’t.

Give me a sign, Sis. Just one.

I imagined seeing my parents at my funeral—their gaunt faces, red-eyed and sleepless. How could I do this to them? Wasn’t the devastation of losing one child enough?

No. Stop. A voice in my head screamed. Don’t do this. Don’t. Please…

I shifted my body, attempted to get my uncooperative legs under me. I could see the phone on my parents’ nightstand. I could make it that far. Had to. The voice was right. I didn’t want to do this. I felt disorientated, dizzy. Darkness crept along the edges of my vision. Focusing became difficult. A sweeping shadow of black caught my attention. Someone stood in the bathroom—not my sister. A man. Had I managed to call 911? I couldn’t remember getting out of the tub. And why’d I get back in? Did I use a towel?

Mom is going to be pissed when she sees the blood I’ve tracked all over the bedroom carpet.

“I’m sorry,” I told the man in black.

“It’s okay, Keely. Don’t be afraid.” Not my father’s voice. It was softer, with a hint of sorrow. Distant. Fleeting. Later, I’d feel embarrassed about this, but for now I was safe from the nothing I’d almost become. My teeth clattered from the chill. My eyelids fluttered in time with my breaths. The tub water had turned the color of port wine. The ribbons, the pretty, red watercolor ribbons were gone.

Dull gray clouded my sight.

A voice whispered to me, and my consciousness floated to the surface again.

“—okay, Keely.”

Cold. So cold.

“I’m right here.”

There was no fear in me as the man bent forward, his face inches from mine. He was my father’s age, and yet strangely older. His eyes were so…blue, almost iridescent. The irises were rimmed in a fine line of black, and the creases etched at the corners reminded me of sunbeams as he gave me a weak smile. The oddly. Dressed. Paramedic. A warm hand reached into the water and cradled mine. My fingers clutched his. I sighed, feeling myself floating, drifting. Light—high and intense exploded before me. No! Too much. Too much! I shuddered and labored to catch my breath, but it wouldn’t come.

Finally, the comfort of darkness rose to greet me.

Day of Sacrifice #5 and another new short story!

DoS #5 – Dissent is out!

Guardians Presley and Liesel volunteer for a special mission to gauge the fallout after Head Guardian Bartholomew’s death.
They discover that things are worse than anyone suspected and their focus changes from intel gathering to search and rescue.
Good thing they work so well together.
Of course, that tends to happen after dating for thirty-eight years.

I also published Back in Time over the weekend. It is included in the Death by Chocolate anthology, but I’ve published it separately because it is the first story in a new short story series. I hope you all will give it a look-see. It’s one of my personal favorites.

Nothing in Aurelia Lemon’s life is turning out how she’d planned. She’s unemployed, unattached, and her family bakery is on the verge of closing. To make matters worse, the guy she dumped in high school is doing well and getting rich off of one of her departed mother’s recipes. It would take a miracle to right everything she’s done wrong. Or maybe just a phone call and the chance to go Back in Time.

If you’ve previously read and reviewed Back in Time in the Death by Chocolate anthology and liked it, I’d be grateful if you could post your review or a portion of your review at any of the above sites.

Now, I’m off to take my son to school and then go to the Home Depot. My dining room that I meant to paint in August 2010 is finally getting spruced up!
